"With You I'yard Built-in Again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 motility picture Fast Break. It was performed by Motown recording artists Baton Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited as Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100[two] and number ii on the UK singles chart.[three]

History [edit]

The music from Fast Break was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Ballad Connors put words to four of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written most of the lyrics to 'With You I'm Born Again' in 22 minutes, just I couldn't discover two words and information technology was driving me crazy."[4] The correct words came to her on her way to an ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her order. "I had finally found it—the line I was seeking--'Come prove me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll find this'—and I wanted to get information technology down on paper."[iv]

Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston's partner for the two duets that had been written for the moving picture,[5] and each vocalist besides had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally not very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to do their own thing, just this worked out extremely well for both of them."[four] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You I'm Born Once more". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it beingness a hitting single."[vi]

Connors noted the impression some were left with by the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the vocal on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he's a star.'" Connors likewise shared, "The belatedly keen Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he showtime heard the song on the radio and stood directly up in amazement, narrowly missing getting his throat cut by the scissors. True story."[4]

But radio airplay and tape sales almost never happened. The Fast Intermission soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco still permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the album, the dance melody "Go for It", was called as the single that would be issued to promote the album. That selection barely made a dent in the charts, spending one calendar week on the Disco singles nautical chart at number lxxx in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for one week at number 108.[2]

The picture show did non become much attention, either, and Preston described their next attempt to give "With You lot I'one thousand Born Again" more exposure, explaining that "after the film didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled it off that album and put it on mine."[six] Preston's album, Late at Night, came out after in 1979, but fifty-fifty with that reissue of the vocal, Preston insisted that "we yet didn't think of it as a unmarried."[6] It did, yet, begin to get airplay in the European market place[6] and was finally released every bit a single at the terminate of the yr.

Another hurdle the song had to overcome was the fact that its title did non click with some record buyers. "Connors says her only regret about 'With You I'thousand Born Over again' is that she didn't championship information technology 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy chosen me to allow me know we had a monster hit on our easily but that early on many people were going into tape stores asking for "Come Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost equally a event.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born once again" is often associated with Christianity may have also been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, just Robert Culp and I were lovers at the fourth dimension, and that'southward the manner nosotros felt about one another. Culp was the inspiration."[iv] The singers likewise felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context also as being a romantic love vocal. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Break, we understood it was a romantic song. But I think of information technology every bit religious because God is love, so it all inter-relates."[6] This religious aspect would later be played upward by the testify Glee in the flavor two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed every bit a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.

Chart success [edit]

"With You I'm Born Over again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated December 8, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[two] The post-obit week marked its beginning appearance on the U.k. singles nautical chart[8] and on Billboard'due south list of the fifty most popular Developed Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both chart runs resulted in a number two showing.[9] [3] It too started three weeks on the mag's Hot Soul Singles nautical chart in the January 19, 1980, consequence and got as high as number 86.[10] Information technology was Preston's biggest hit in five years and the biggest pop hitting of Wright'southward career.
